When Time Changed Shape

Image
It began with someone else’s unease. My rooh ki saheli (soul friend)  had messaged earlier that morning. She was leaving for her six-hour-away destination in interior Sindh and wrote about her travel anxiety. The restlessness before departure, the ache of transition itself. I thought about it as I packed. Why am I not anxious anymore? I, who once turned every journey into mild existential drama. That question stayed with me as we left Fujairah.  I sat in the passenger seat while my three travel companions chatted in the back. AirPods in, I drifted into my own world. HAEVN’s The Sea filled it: songs that float between melancholy and surrender. “Back in the water, I feel like myself again,” the lyrics said. A chaddi buddy , childhood friend I’d recently rediscovered, had introduced me to the playlist. It felt like a small dedication, a familiar tide returning after years apart.  The road wound along the coast, sea glinting on one side, barren hills of Sharjah on the othe...

Fragments from a Pilgrimage: Rumi, Shams, and the Rest of Us

Image
I didn’t think much of it back then - Konya. A few days carved out from a longer trip. A loosely held plan. But now, years later, I can still recall how it felt. Getting to Konya wasn’t easy, or at least not emotionally. I took a ten-hour overnight coach from Gaziantep. It wasn’t just a geographic shift. It was me, testing myself. Years ago, on my first trip to Istanbul in the late 2000s, I was mugged; trapped, manhandled, left shaken . That experience embedded a quiet anxiety whenever I thought about returning to Turkey. But this trip was different. I needed to reclaim something. I wanted to prove to myself that I could be in this country, move through it alone, and feel safe. And I did. Nothing happened. Not in Konya, not elsewhere. That, in itself, was a kind of healing. Now mind you, Konya wasn’t dramatic. There was no thunderclap, no burning bush. Just presence. And silence. Not empty silence, but the kind that listens back. I stayed two nights. Walked between Rumi’s tomb an...

Seeking the Simurgh in a Flooded World: A Sufi Reading of Flow

Image
There’s a cat. There’s no dialogue. There are no humans. That’s how Flow begins; quietly, like a breath held underwater. A world submerged, not just in water, but in silence, memory, and what’s left when the Anthropocene folds in on itself. The cat doesn’t meow for help. It doesn’t explain. It moves: hesitant, curious, sometimes afraid. We follow. And perhaps, like me, you start seeing yourself in the cat. Not in some mystical reincarnation way, but in the way it stares at a collapsing world and keeps moving forward. Alone. Until it isn’t. Flight Time, Liminal Time It’s not the first time a film has gripped me midair. Something about that altitude - between departure and arrival, held in suspension - tunes the soul to a different frequency. Last time, it was Mother, Couch and Lost Lake Confessions during a layover that stirred meditations on mortality and the tragic absurdity of family (as I wrote in “ Under the Weight of Absurdity ” ). This time, it was Flow: silent, surreal...

The Path to Happiness: Embracing Ikigai and Stoicism in Life's Journey (Part IV of #DecadeReflection)

Image
Introduction In our pursuit of happiness and contentment, we often find ourselves seeking guidance from various philosophies and concepts that offer insight into the art of living. Two such principles, Ikigai and Stoicism, hold profound wisdom that can illuminate our path to genuine fulfillment. By exploring the intertwining threads of Ikigai and Stoicism, we embark on a journey towards discovering the true essence of happiness and contentment. The Essence of Ikigai At the core of Ikigai lies the belief that each individual possesses a unique purpose, a reason for being. Derived from the Japanese culture, Ikigai represents the joy and goal of living. It is the harmony that arises when our passions, professions, vocations, and missions intersect. Embracing Ikigai calls for a deep introspection, a voyage within ourselves to uncover the hidden treasures that define our existence. Just as the Japanese proclaim, everyone has an Ikigai, but it requires a profound and often arduous sear...

The Reflective Journey: Embracing Wu Wei, the Childlike Spirit, and the Harmonious Flow (Part III of #DecadeReflection)

Image
Introduction In the reflective journey of life, we encounter profound wisdom from various traditions. Taoism offers invaluable insights with its emphasis on living in harmony with nature and embracing simplicity. In this article, we delve into three key concepts: Wu Wei, the childlike spirit, and the harmonious flow. By combining the wisdom of Taoism with the concept of the Reflective Journey, we invite you to navigate life's complexities with grace, authenticity, and a harmonious flow. Wu Wei: Effortless Action and Non-Action Wu Wei, the core principle of Taoism, is often described as "non-action" or "effortless action." It teaches us to find balance between action and non-action, understanding that sometimes the most effective course of action is to refrain from acting. By observing nature's wisdom and flowing with the natural course of events, we can navigate life's challenges with ease and adaptability. Embracing Wu Wei allows us to focus on the ...

From an Insomniac’s Dream (VII) - Wonderland

Image
T oday heralds the beginning of an era Not of interest to meaningless minds Regardless, the story must be told. Of an apparent merger of Yin and Yang In reality, the triumph of a trichotomy or perhaps a triumvirate? Since there was a He - the babysitter; a She - the divine feminine; and a Me - the Child Three companions on the trip of a lifetime whither thoughts were elicited, meaning sought, and purpose created, if not found. Let’s start at the beginning. But what was that? Or when? Was the origin the bright colors that tasted sweet? Or the vibration of chrysanthemums – a mere conversation with chlorophyll Or the music reverberating, drumming, thrumming…smelling of nostalgia  Or the tablecover’s patchwork of whorls That pulled you in when you felt the threads Drowning, then surfacing and breathing again, once called out Making love through head and hair And fingers reaching for one’s organic and inorganic anchors Or the appearance of dry figs and nuts    sittin...

From an Insomniac's Dream (VI) - Communion

Image
T oday heralds beginning of an era Not of interest to meaningless minds Regardless, the story must be told. Of rain, sea, wind and rock Nature’s elements gone wild A blessing or a curse to observe Their might and mystery? And yet, only gratitude, that I’m alive! But there’s more… A magnetism An attraction within to the storm without Shall I embrace thee? Stripped to my bare skin Drenched to the bone Shall I walk into thine storm’s eye? Then stand still, very still Slam dunk in the middle Just feel and be Accept chaos without to get to peace within                 Shall we merge tonight, my love? Nature and I, conjugal rite A divine oneness, a solo journey Of darkness unto light My soul’s union Of communion. And that said, esoterica from an insomniac’s dream must come to an end Like the wave front comes to an end at the shore, No matter how calm or agitated ocean o...
