A Decade of Growth: Navigating the Tapestry of a Baylor Alumnus

In the grand tapestry of life, milestones are the threads that weave our unique stories together. As I reflect on a decade since bidding farewell to the hallowed halls of Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and Texas Children's Hospital (TCH), it's not just the years gone by, but the invaluable lessons learned that make this milestone worth celebrating, six of which I list below (in no particular order).

1. A Foundation Built to Last: My journey began at BCM and TCH, where dreams took root and a passion for medicine, genetics, and pediatrics flourished. The lesson here is that a solid foundation is essential, shaping the course of an extraordinary career. In 2003, earning my PhD set the stage for the path ahead.

2. Navigating Pioneering Trajectories: Completing Pediatrics and Medical Genetics in 2008, I embarked on a journey of discovery. Winning the Thrasher Research Fund Early Career Award, my work in the department showcased the potential of translational genomics in pediatric emergency medicine. The lesson: Dedication and vision pave the way for pioneering contributions.

3. Beyond the Lab Coat: The journey extended beyond research, embracing social innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship as part of my DNA. Championing a novel child literacy paradigm for global child health and emergency medicine taught me that personal success is enriched when contributing to a larger purpose. Recognition, like the Congressional Certificate of Merit, became a byproduct of meaningful impact.

4. Global Impact as a Paradigm Shift: Taking my skills to Pakistan at the Aga Khan University (AKU), the last decade has taught me the importance of a global perspective. Serving as the Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at AKU, the lesson is clear—impact extends beyond borders, ushering in an era of innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit in healthcare for low-middle-income countries.

5. Embracing a Multifaceted Identity: Serving as an emergency physician, dedicated researcher, inspiring educator, innovative entrepreneur, skilled writer, and wellness coach, I learned that a multifaceted identity enhances the ability to contribute meaningfully. My startup, ZALSA, reflects a commitment to well-being that transcends traditional roles.

6. Pillars of Support: Amidst the achievements, the importance of mentors stands out. Drs. Brendan Lee, Joan Shook, and Paul Sirbaugh from BCM served as unwavering pillars of support and inspiration. The lesson learned is that success is not solitary; it is built upon the guidance and encouragement of those who believe in your potential.

In Conclusion: As I celebrate this crucial decade, it's not just a personal achievement; it's a testament to the transformative power of education, mentorship, and a deep-rooted passion for making the world a better place. The journey continues, fueled by these six invaluable lessons, as I aspire to inspire, innovate, and contribute to shaping the future of healthcare—a modest contribution to the broader success story of Baylor (and past that, AKU).

Cheers to the next decade of growth - failures and accomplishments!
