Embracing the Abyss: Nietzsche and Rumi Unveiling Existential Meaning (Part V of #DecadeReflection)

Image
Introduction In a world that seems on the brink of self-destruction, the profound question posed by John Kaag in his book 'Hiking with Nietzsche' resonates powerfully: "What are the possibilities for human existence in an age determined to annihilate itself?" This query propelled me on a profound journey of self-reflection, marking my ten years in Pakistan after fifteen years in the United States. As I immersed myself in the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, I began to explore the realms of nihilism, existentialism, and absurdism, searching for solace and meaning amidst the chaos and ambiguity of the 21st century. Nietzsche and Rumi The convergence of Nietzschean philosophy and the teachings of Rumi, the great Sufi poet and mystic, is a serendipitous encounter that has reshaped my perception of existence. While delving into Nietzsche's works, particularly through 'When Nietzsche Wept' by Irvin Yalom, I embarked on a journey through Turkey, traversi...

Create to Innovate: Harnessing Human-Centered Design and Generative AI for Clinical Problem-Solving through the Art of Storytelling

Image
In a world where healthcare challenges demand innovative solutions, the Health Tech Summit 2023 at the Aga Khan University introduced a masterclass that seamlessly blended creativity, technology, and human-centric approaches. Drs. Khan Siddiqui and Asad Mian led this exciting journey into the realms of Human-Centered Design Thinking (HCDT) and Generative AI, unveiling a captivating exploration into the art of storytelling as a means of clinical problem-solving. The need for such a masterclass arose from the recognition that conventional methodologies often fall short in addressing the intricate landscape of healthcare challenges. As the stage was set for an innovative workshop, participants, ranging from doctors to tech enthusiasts, nurses, students, and researchers, gathered for an interdisciplinary experience that transcended traditional boundaries. Create to Innovate: A Fusion of Concepts At the core of this masterclass was the concept of ‘Create-2-Innovate’ (C2i), a dynamic s...

Serving as an ACEP International Ambassador in the Liaison category, representing Pakistan on the global ACEP stage, has been an incredibly rewarding experience. This year's ACEP2023, held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, marked a personal milestone for me. Being honored with the ACEP2023 Ambassador Liaison Award for demonstrating dedication and reliability in my role was a proud moment. My efforts extended beyond the Aga Khan University, as I championed the case for Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship (I|C|E) in the field of emergency medicine, not only within my country but globally . Among the many engaging sessions at the conference, I had the opportunity to present my impassioned pitch for low-c...

Introduction In our pursuit of happiness and contentment, we often find ourselves seeking guidance from various philosophies and concepts that offer insight into the art of living. Two such principles, Ikigai and Stoicism, hold profound wisdom that can illuminate our path to genuine fulfillment. By exploring the intertwining threads of Ikigai and Stoicism, we embark on a journey towards discovering the true essence of happiness and contentment. The Essence of Ikigai At the core of Ikigai lies the belief that each individual possesses a unique purpose, a reason for being. Derived from the Japanese culture, Ikigai represents the joy and goal of living. It is the harmony that arises when our passions, professions, vocations, and missions intersect. Embracing Ikigai calls for a deep introspection, a voyage within ourselves to uncover the hidden treasures that define our existence. Just as the Japanese proclaim, everyone has an Ikigai, but it requires a profound and often arduous sear...
